Gearbox design cycles are continuing to shrink. OEMs require engineers to submit accurate quotes in a very short timeframe, and bearing selection is often the critical bottleneck: manual lookups cannot accurately reflect bearing performance, and back-and-forth communication with manufacturers is time-consuming. This is not only a challenge of speed but also a structural pressure faced by the entire powertrain design industry during its digital transformation.
Our response is to integrate over 125 years of engineering expertise into a digital tool that is accessible anytime.
What is Timken® Syber®?

The Timken® Syber® Bearing System Designer (BSD) is an online engineering platform open to design engineers. It is available for free after registration and supports access from any device, 24/7. The database contains over 30,000 bearing models, covering the full range of tapered, cylindrical, self-aligning, and ball bearings.
Syber® is a system-level modeling and analysis platform. Design engineers can directly build application system models within it—by inputting operating parameters for gear shafts, the tool instantly calculates the actual performance of the bearings working in conjunction with other components, outputting key metrics such as bearing adjusted life, load, stress, and lubrication coefficients.
Its core calculation logic is 100% compatible with the version used by Timken’s internal application engineers. Design engineers can directly exchange system model files with our team, eliminating the need for redundant modeling.
Addressing the Issues That Truly Impact Efficiency

The challenges design engineers face during the bearing selection phase typically fall into two categories.
Accuracy. Traditional computational analysis struggles to accurately replicate complex real-world operating conditions. Syber® enables design engineers to incorporate factors such as load distribution, temperature, and lubrication, ensuring simulation results consistently approximate actual operating conditions.
Speed. In the past, the process of “waiting for confirmation from the manufacturer’s engineers” alone could take several days. With Syber®, design engineers can complete simulations and analyze results in minutes, and make selection decisions within hours. For quotation tasks where every hour counts, this difference in efficiency is decisive.

Behind the Digital Tool
Lies the Engineering Team’s Accumulated Knowledge

Syber® serves as the digital gateway to the collective knowledge of Timken’s application engineering team. The R&D team continuously integrates new findings into the platform, and application engineers leverage this accumulated expertise through the tool to help customers solve every extreme scenario that lacks a standard answer.
If a problem falls outside the scope of Syber®, design engineers can submit an inquiry online, and our experts will respond within 24 hours. The latest iteration of the Smart Selection feature automatically filters results based on target service life and critical dimensions, further reducing selection time.
